Tamworth Borough Council has launched a formal six-week consultation on its draft pre-submission local plan. The consultation opens on Monday 24 August and closes on Monday 5 October 2026.

The local plan will guide how Tamworth grows and changes over the next two decades, before it is submitted to the Planning Inspectorate for independent examination. It sets out the vision, policies and framework for how land across the borough will be used and developed between now and 2043.

What the plan covers

The draft plan covers a wide range of topics and is underpinned by key principles for decision-making across the borough to 2043. These include making the best use of Tamworth's limited supply of land; delivering high quality, affordable homes to meet the community's diverse needs; supporting and diversifying the local economy; and regenerating the town centre into a thriving destination with a vibrant evening economy.

The local plan guides decisions on planning applications and determines what gets built, where, and what areas are protected.

Background and previous engagement

This consultation stage builds on several months of engagement with residents, businesses and community groups, who have helped shape the plan from early conversations about priorities for the borough through to detailed feedback on specific policies and proposals.

Council reorganisation context

Tamworth Borough Council will be replaced by a larger council covering South and Mid Staffordshire in 2028. However, the local plan itself will continue beyond reorganisation, meaning input given during this consultation will continue to influence how Tamworth develops after 2028.

This document touches on almost every part of daily life in Tamworth, from the homes we live in and the jobs available to us, to how we protect our heritage for future generations."
