A former Tamworth taxi driver was ordered to pay £234 after smoking in a licensed vehicle, Tamworth Borough Council has said.
In a release issued on 19 October, the council said Stephen Turner smoked in a licensed Hackney Carriage on 30 May 2025, when he held a taxi licence with the authority.
The case was dealt with at Cannock Magistrates' Court through the Single Justice Procedure on 9 June 2026, when the offence was proved.
Turner was fined £60 and ordered to pay £150 in costs and a £24 victim surcharge. The £234 total includes those costs and the surcharge, rather than being the fine alone.
The council said it initially issued a fixed penalty notice, but decided to prosecute after the notice went unpaid. It said Turner is no longer licensed as a taxi driver with the authority.
The offence was brought under Section 7 of the Health Act 2006, which concerns smoking in a smoke-free place.
Councillor David Foster said passengers should be able to expect a clean and safe environment, and that licensed drivers were responsible for following the rules applying to their vehicles.
The council has used the case to remind drivers that smoking in a licensed vehicle is against the law.
