Tamworth Borough Council has begun the next round of free electrical safety inspections in council homes as part of its continuing five-year testing programme.
The checks are being carried out with GOOM Electrical Limited and are intended to identify potential faults before they become a risk to tenants or their homes.
Qualified electricians will inspect wiring, sockets and electrical units inside each property. If a problem is found, repairs will either be completed during the visit or arranged for a later date, depending on the work required.
The inspection is free for council tenants. Households due to receive a check will be contacted directly to arrange an appointment, and the council is asking residents to respond promptly and provide access at the agreed time.
Electrical installations can deteriorate through age, damage or ordinary use. Periodic inspections allow electricians to check whether circuits remain safe, whether protective equipment is working correctly and whether any remedial work is needed.
The authority said access is important because missed appointments can delay safety work. Tenants who cannot attend an arranged visit should contact the contractor or council as soon as possible so another appointment can be made.
Five-year safety programme
The latest work follows the previous five-year programme, which had completed checks in 1,919 council properties by the end of March 2025.
Councillor Ben Clarke, Tamworth Borough Council's portfolio holder for housing, homelessness and planning, is responsible for the service area overseeing the programme.
The checks form part of the council's wider responsibility to maintain safe homes and keep electrical systems in suitable condition. Residents should continue to report faults rather than waiting for a scheduled inspection if they notice damage, burning smells, repeated power trips or another immediate concern.
Council tenants can report an urgent repair at any time through the 24-hour repairs hotline on 0800 183 0044. Non-urgent enquiries can be emailed to repairs@tamworth.gov.uk.
Residents can also use the council's MyHousing service to view housing information and manage relevant requests online. Further guidance is available through the repairs section of the Tamworth Borough Council website.
