A pub writer has highlighted Tamworth’s independent venues and distinctive buildings after spending an evening exploring seven town-centre pubs.
Scott Spencer, who writes as Micropub Adventures, has shared an account of his visit with Local Gazette. His feature focuses on the people he met, the interiors he explored and the different character of each stop.
Scott, whose blog is based in Yorkshire, says the welcome he received was one of the highlights of the evening.
Seven stops around the town centre
The King’s Ditch, Lower Gungate: Scott began at the micropub, describing wooden benches, small tables and a collection of brewery mirrors, signs and dried hops.
The Sir Robert Peel: Another stop brought dark beams, red ceilings, rock memorabilia and old brewery signs. His account describes a busy room and conversations with people enjoying their evening.
The Tamworth Tap: The pub’s brewing displays, wood panelling and garden overlooking Tamworth Castle were among the details that stood out.
The Market Vaults, Market Street: Scott explored a series of rooms with fireplaces, old glass and brewery memorabilia, describing a traditional pub with plenty to look at.
The Hop House: His visit to the Castle Hotel building took in green walls, a wooden bar, comfortable seating and seasonal Halloween decorations.
The Old Bank House, Ladybank: The former bank’s different rooms, fireplaces, mirrors and chandeliers gave this stop a setting of its own.
The Moat House: Exposed beams, traditional furniture, an impressive fireplace and gardens overlooking the River Tame made up the final stop in his account.
A visitor’s perspective
The feature brings together seven different places within the town centre, with personal observations about their surroundings and the conversations that helped make the evening memorable.
Scott says he would be happy to return and explore more. His full account, A Right Royal Round: Tamworth’s Pubs, Pints & Hidden History, appears on Micropub Adventures.
