The government has announced plans to reorganise local government across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent, with two new unitary councils replacing ten existing authorities from April 2028. Tamworth Borough Council will cease to exist as a separate entity and merge into Southern and Mid Staffordshire Council.
The new council structure will be responsible for all services currently delivered across the region, including housing, waste collection, education, children's and adult social care, and roads maintenance.

Councillor Carol Dean, Leader of Tamworth Borough Council, said the outcome was not the council's preferred proposal, but confirmed the focus is now on working with other Staffordshire councils to implement the change effectively.
Councillor Dean added that resident feedback emphasising the importance of local and responsive services will continue to guide the council's approach as the new authority takes shape.
No immediate service changes
Tamworth Borough Council has confirmed there will be no immediate changes to services. Residents should continue to access council support in the same way until further notice. More detailed plans will be developed over the coming months, with residents kept informed of progress.
