Tamworth residents have until 4 October to comment on a proposal for a borough-wide parish council with five wards and 15 unpaid councillors.

The second stage of Tamworth Borough Council's community governance review opened on 4 September. It asks for views on draft recommendations drawn up by a cross-party working group following the first consultation earlier this year.

No final decision to create a parish council has been made. Residents can find the proposals and the response form through the council's community governance review pages.

What is being proposed?

The working group recommends one parish council covering the whole borough, divided into five wards. Each would elect three councillors serving as unpaid volunteers.

The proposed ward names, and the existing county council divisions they would follow, are:

  • Mercia — Perrycrofts.
  • Saxon — The Heaths.
  • Anker — The Cotes/Two Rivers.
  • Tame — Watling.
  • Peel — Wilnecote.

The council's published information confirms there are currently no parish councils within Tamworth Borough.

What would it cost?

A new parish council would be funded through a precept: an additional charge on council tax bills.

Using an indicative initial budget of £500,000 a year, the council's proposal lists an annual charge of £20.65 for a Band D property. The published annual figures range from £13.77 for Band A to £41.30 for Band H. These are proposed costs, not charges that have already been approved.

The council says the budget would cover setting up and running the organisation, including staff, meeting space, elections, local representation and allotment administration. Any future precept would be decided by the new parish council if it is established.

The consultation closes on Sunday 4 October 2026. The council says letters about the review are being sent to homes across the borough. Questions can be directed to cgrenquiries@tamworth.gov.uk.

Councillor Carol Dean, chair of the working group, said: “These are draft recommendations, and we want your feedback to help shape what happens next.”

After considering responses, the working group is expected to bring a report to full council on 8 December. If approved, the proposed parish council would begin operating on 1 April 2027, with elections on 6 May 2027. Those dates remain conditional on the council's decision.
