A new opera inspired by Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians, will be presented in a narrated recital at St Editha's Church in Tamworth on Saturday 31 October 2026.

The evening performance starts at 7pm and lasts around 90 minutes. A separate children's opera workshop is planned for 4pm at the church.

The event forms part of the Æthelflæd: A New Opera Cathedral Tour, bringing together live singing, music and narration.

History told through music

American soprano Rachel Kobernick will perform alongside New York composer Andre Fratto. Fratto will narrate the recital, with selections from the complete opera presented in chronological order.

The production draws on the story of Æthelflæd, daughter of Alfred the Great, and her place in Mercian history. It is an artistic interpretation rather than a historical lecture.

The Tamworth event is a recital featuring excerpts from the full-length work, not a performance of the entire opera.

Tickets for the 7pm recital are available through the organisers’ recital booking page.

The 4pm children's workshop has a separate booking page. Families should check that listing for the workshop's attendance arrangements before booking.
