When Gillian first attended her local Slimming World group in November 2016, she expected help with losing a few pounds. She did not expect the experience to change the way she thought about food, health and looking after herself.

She had previously managed her weight by making adjustments on her own, but that approach was no longer working as well as it once had. Although she felt apprehensive about paying to attend a weight-loss group, Gillian says she found a warm welcome, friendly faces and a supportive atmosphere.

Gillian has lost 11lb since joining. She says the biggest change, however, was not the number on the scales but learning that healthier eating did not have to mean restriction, guilt or giving up the foods she enjoyed.

Her family still enjoys its favourite meals, including special weekend dishes. Gillian says a few simple changes, more vegetables and practical swaps have made their way of eating feel enjoyable and sustainable.

The weekly group also became an important source of encouragement. Gillian describes it as time to pause, reflect, plan ahead and reconnect with her goals. Whether the week had gone well or proved difficult, she says she received understanding and practical support rather than judgement.

Over the years, many members became friends. They shared ideas, celebrated milestones and supported each other through setbacks. Gillian says that sense of community showed her how powerful it can be to know that you are not making changes alone.

As she has grown older, her motivation has become increasingly focused on protecting her future health and maintaining an active, independent life. She sees every positive choice as an investment in the years ahead.

That experience has led Gillian to train as a consultant. She says she wants to help other people find the food freedom, friendship, confidence and support that she discovered through her own group.

Gillian will launch her Kingsbury group at Kingsbury Methodist Church on Thursday 15 October, with sessions at 5.30pm and 7pm.
