Tamworth Borough Council has opened retail units at Ankerside to local independent start-ups and eligible organisations, with subsidised rents and flexible lease arrangements designed to lower the cost of setting up a town centre business.
Units range from 223 square feet to 1,032 square feet. The council is subsidising property costs through the scheme, with the aim of supporting businesses through their initial setup phase. Rents will be reviewed annually as businesses establish themselves, before moving to standard commercial terms.
Who can apply
The Ankerside Community Lettings Policy is open to three categories: registered charities, community interest companies and non-profit community groups; social enterprises reinvesting the majority of profits into their social mission; and local independent start-ups trading for less than 24 months and based within a 10-mile radius of Tamworth.
The initial rental period is 12 months, with continued council support as businesses become more established. Flexible short-term lease and licence arrangements are available, including flexible break options.

Beyond rent subsidies, Tamworth Borough Council can help successful applicants with grant signposting and letters of support for funding applications to help reduce setup costs.
Councillor Nova Arkney, portfolio holder for infrastructure and the local economy, said the scheme aims to give start-ups a genuine opportunity to establish themselves without being priced out. "Ankerside is a key part of our town centre and bringing in a wider mix of independent businesses will help drive footfall and create a more varied experience for everyone," she said.
The council cited the success of Town Hall Place as evidence of appetite for independent businesses in Tamworth.
