Tamworth residents have just over one week to submit their views on proposals to create a new parish council for the borough. The public consultation on the draft recommendations closes on Sunday 4 October 2026.
The consultation is part of Tamworth Borough Council's ongoing community governance review, which is examining how local representation and decision-making could work in the future.
How the consultation works
A cross-party working group of councillors — made up of Councillor Carol Dean, Councillor Stephen Doyle, Councillor Lee Wood, Councillor Bernard Skeen, Councillor Gareth Coates and Councillor Dave Foster — drew up the draft recommendations following earlier engagement with residents earlier this year.
Residents can complete the survey online on the council’s community governance review page. All homes in the borough are being sent a letter about the community governance review to ensure everyone has the opportunity to respond.
What is being proposed?
The draft proposal is for one parish council covering the whole borough, divided into five wards with three unpaid councillors in each. The 15 councillors would represent wards matching the existing county council divisions:
- Mercia: Perrycrofts.
- Saxon: The Heaths.
- Anker: Cotes and Two Rivers.
- Tame: Watling.
- Peel: Wilnecote.
Residents can read the council’s full parish council proposal before responding.
What would a parish council cost?
A parish council would be funded through a precept, an additional amount added to council tax. Based on an indicative annual budget of £500,000, the weekly cost would range from 24 pence for a Band A property to 79 pence for a Band H property.
Councillor Carol Dean, chair of the working group, said: "There is now just one week left for residents to have their say on these draft recommendations. We want to hear from as many residents as possible before any final decision is made. Whether you support the proposals, have concerns or simply want to understand more about what is being suggested, please take the time to look at the information and share your views."
She added that many residents may be hearing about the proposals for the first time, and that feedback would help shape what happens next.
The council’s illustrative annual figures range from £13.77 for a Band A property to £41.30 for Band H. These are consultation estimates based on the £500,000 budget, and the eventual precept would depend on the final decisions.
What happens after the consultation
Once the consultation closes on 4 October 2026, the working group will consider all responses and prepare a report. A decision by full council is expected on 8 December 2026.
