Tamworth Borough Council has voted to launch a major review into establishing a new town council for the borough. The decision was made at a full council meeting on 20 May. A Community Governance Review will now run for up to 12 months, with consultation starting in late June.

The review will involve asking residents, community groups, and local organisations for their views on the proposal. If approved, a new town council could be created with its own ward boundaries, councillor numbers, and governance arrangements designed to meet Tamworth's local needs. The first elections would take place in May 2028.

A cross-party working group will oversee the entire Community Governance Review process to ensure it is conducted properly and fairly. Stephen Gabriel, chief executive at Tamworth Borough Council, described the move as "an exciting step" that would allow local people to have their say on how the borough is run. He encouraged residents to get involved and share their views as the review progresses.

The consultation period offers Tamworth residents a chance to influence the future structure of local governance. Anyone interested in the proposal can expect to hear more details when the review officially kicks off in late June. This represents a significant opportunity for the community to shape how Tamworth is administered going forward.
