Tamworth residents are receiving 160,000 new food waste caddies as part of a major recycling overhaul. Deliveries have started today and will continue over the next five weeks, reaching around 80,000 households across Tamworth Borough and Lichfield District. From 20 July, weekly food waste collections will begin on residents' regular bin days.

The scheme responds to new government recycling rules that require councils to offer separate food waste collections. Once collected, food waste from Tamworth households will be processed through anaerobic digestion – a process that converts kitchen scraps into renewable fuel and fertiliser. This means your leftover food will no longer be sent to the incinerator.

Residents living in flats and apartments will receive their caddies separately at the end of June. The council has asked households to watch for their delivery and avoid contacting them about missing caddies until the rollout is complete, as some areas of Tamworth will receive deliveries before others.

The weekly collection service represents a significant change to how Tamworth residents manage household waste. By separating food waste from general rubbish, the borough is joining councils across the country in meeting new environmental standards. Households should be ready to use their new caddies when collections officially start on 20 July.
